Our History
In 2004, members of Polaris Project's National Grassroots Initiative formed the "DC Fight Trafficking and Slavery Meetup Group." This community group was one of several interest-based "Meetup" groups and used the main meetup.com website to recruit members.
The organization is comprised of concerned citizens who want to learn about human trafficking, find out ways to help fight modern day slavery, and raise awareness about the issue within their community.
In early 2007, the members changed the name to "Stop Modern Slavery" and changed the website to www.stopmodernslavery.org. The co-organizers finished the "Stop Modern Slavery Toolkit" project to give other communities to necessary tools to create their own anti-slavery group.
In late 2007, the members began building a more structured organization and cohesive culture. A culture of purpose, goals, and actions was established to guide forward motion and enable the group to realize its enormous potential.
The group was reorganized into six committees:
- Membership: Foster and increase membership.
- Partnership & Outreach: Build relationships with partner organizations and people.
- Events & Fundraising: Organize events and raise funds for partner organizations.
- Research & Information: Keep up on news and events. Manage content direction of new website (stopmodernslavery.org)
- Policy: Engage legislators and promote legislation.
- Technology: Explore technology as an enabler.
